A Mini Guide To Choosing An Amplifier
It's a major part of the car audio system and in turn, needs to be carefully thought about. Don't rush the process of buying an amp, as forgetting to check certain specifications may occur, which will then cause your amp not to work as well as it should.
When shopping for an amp, take a checklist. These may include, power, efficiency, signal to noise ratio, and price. The latter is important because it is vital that you get value for your money.
Most car audio enthusiasts will agree that power is probably the most important specification on the list. First of all, you need to purchase your speakers or subwoofers before your amp, and then match the spec with them. Knowing their impedance (power in ohms) and efficiency will help you to decide what level of power you will need for them to work correctly. People tend to under power speakers or subwoofers, with amplifiers of a low power compatibility, which will of course cause a lower output.
It's always good to know the maximum output of an amplifier, in order to match it up correctly with your newly bought subwoofers or speakers. This will usually be found on the amp itself; however, these markings are not always accurate. Instead, go look at reviews of amplifier brands and if there markings are a true reflection of maximum power output.
Car audio specialists also concentrate on the signal to noise ratio. By and large, they agree that the higher the better, as it will enable a listener to hear mid-bass and range, as well as the higher rangers. For bass lovers, there are a number of amps on the market, which are purely dedicated to bass. However, they often have issues with signal and noise issues.
Efficiency is not only integral to saving power, but if your amplifier is not efficient it will not have the correct continuous power. Manufacturers sometimes claim an efficiency rate that is not quite correct due to using a smaller sized fuse than is needed. Check the maths out with this one. A standard amplifier should be at least 50% efficient and any less is generally not worth your money. To find out if your amp is efficient, divide the total power by the battery voltage - the number you get out (it may have to be rounded up or down depending) will be the size of fuse you need in your amp. Any smaller sized fuse will lower your amps efficiency rate.
Lastly, is the budget. Car amps can get quite expensive, but value for money is what counts not the cost. For instance, you don't want a medium priced amp, which is mediocre and not up to your specifications, when you could have spent a little more to get a decent amplifier. To real value for money, you do have to do a little research and price analysis across companies.

I have a 10" 2000 watt 4ohm subwoofer, with a 1000 watt amplifier. Is the amp underpowering the sub?
the amp is a sony xplod 2/1 channel power amplifier XM-2165gtx.
the sub is an Almani S7-10
DVC 2 Ohm Woofer. claimed to have a 2000 watt max
If the sub is 2000 W max then no... as RMS power is generally half of the max...
If it is 2000 RMS, then yes it is being underpowered.. ALOT !!
Boston Acoustics CS 226 loudspeakers & 10Wi Subwoofer Review
There are certain names in the speaker business that it seems like everyone knows. Boston Acoustics is one such name. The company has been building speakers since 1979 but hasn't forgotten its two-channel “stereo” roots. But even a dedicated two-channel guy like myself has come to appreciate the home theater experience, so I split the difference for this review and asked Boston Acoustics for a ...
