There is one big note when purchasing a subwoofer. That is determine how much space you are willing to dedicate to the heart pounding spot welding busting sound that the subwoofer delivers?. Subwoofers are generally speakers of 8" to 15" and will require more amplifier power and won't fit in the small holes in your Mini Van. Subwoofers will also require an enclosure to produce these lower frequencies effectively. Sometimes the enclosure can be as simple as the trunk of a sedan or as complex as a isobaric loaded series-tuned dual-reflex band pass enclosure. The cone size and enclosure required will be two very important factors when deciding on a subwoofer for your system.
There are many manufacturers that offer non-typical subwoofer applications. Examples are the round type subwoofer box and the vehicle specific subwoofer system. The round subwoofers are cylinders (tubes) with one end containing the subwoofer and the other end sealed. These are a fairly common way of adding a subwoofer to a limited space or a leased vehicle and come with amplifier varieties as well.
Think about the type of music that you like to listen to the most. If this music is heavy on bass, then you should consider a more powerful subwoofer and amp system. Are you working within your budget by determining how much subwoofer and car amp's you can afford to pay for and then sticking to it. If you go into debt over your car audio system, you won't enjoy it nearly as much. When picking the right size subwoofer. The most common sizes of subwoofer are 8-inch, 10-inch, 12-inch and 15-inch. Choosing the right one has a lot to do with the type of music you enjoy listening to in your car. As a general guide larger subwoofers produce a lower frequency which may be ideal if you are a big fan of techno music. Why to check for a durable subwoofer cone. The subwoofer cone is the device that protects your subwoofer over the years in whatever harsh conditions may come along. There are a number of different cones to choose from, each of which has a different price point. Subwoofer cone types include: polypropylene, aluminum, and carbon fiber and the newer models come in Kevlar. Car audio experts agree that it is best to avoid paper cones due to their low durability. The most important thing of all to remember is to do your home work. By researching all the different types of subwoofer systems, you will be much more likely to find the perfect fit for your car.

Building Subwoofer Sound
The subwoofer sound of bass is becoming more and more popular everyday. With music being so deep into our human culture, the system components of music will be popular pretty much no matter what.
Gaining bass out of a car audio system is literally an art in itself. There are a couple of different things that can be done to really make a subwoofer sound system a lot louder.
1. The correct pressure differences between the speaker fronts and backs.
A lot of people install new speakers in a vehicle but don't have the correct pressure differences. When a speaker doesn't have the correct pressure differences, it pretty much kills the quality of sound going through it. Same goes for subwoofers except that the sound quality is magnified by a lot more. There is a reason subwoofers are called loudspeakers.
2. Amount of cubic space in the enclosures.
For subwoofers, the amount of cubic space the box has inside of it is pretty much everything. If your suffocating the subwoofer with not enough space for it to work with, it will kill the sound quality like no other. By looking up the specifications for each subwoofer, you can find what you need to work with.
3. Type of enclosure.
The different types of enclosures out there can really change the sound levels in an environment. Vented boxes are to of said "twice the loudness" as sealed boxes now, but I'm not totally sure I believe that. Bandpass boxes are also very loud in different situations. It just all depends on what your environment is.
As you have found out, there are tons of variables that can really change the sound levels in an environment. If your looking to achieve louder levels of bass, do your homework and put in some dedicated work and you will see it all pay off.

Will any kind of sub work in a bandpass box?
I am putting a system in my car and acquired a single 12" dual ported bandpass box and I was wondering if I could get any sub to work well in it.
You need to know the internal dimensions or volume, as well as the port frequency. These factors are both important when choosing a sub, especially with a BP box, because if the box is too small for the sub, you are going to loose your low-end, if port is too high of a frequency, it becomes annoyingly loud in the mid bass, and your low-end disappears, and if it's tuned too low, you loose all the benefits of a port, and it just adds noise to the system.
**With that said, it's usually pretty hard to find that info on your own, you usually have to get it off the manual, (which might be available online), but for bandpass systems, pretty much any sub will atleast make noise in it, so you can try swapping out a few cheaper subs, to see if one sounds good to you.
