Rebuilding a turbo is always a scary process for many people. The worst possible scenario, which everyone is afraid of, is to rebuild their turbo and have the turbine be off balance. Having the turbo turbine be off-balance can cause damaging wear on the center-section of the turbocharger, causing the turbo to perform horribly until it eventually breaks.
In order to prevent this situation, there is a way to make sure the turbine, along with every other part, is put together properly and balanced, during the rebuild, so it as close to its' original factory condition. Although it isn't necessary, you could do the entire rebuild, not worrying about alignment and balancing parts during the rebuild, and get the turbocharger professionally balanced, once you complete the rebuild. Doing this would make the rebuild easier; however, it can also cost a few dollars to have a professional take a look at the rebuilt turbo.
If you would rather not take it to a professional, you need to take extra time during the rebuild, making sure every part lines up properly and is as close to perfect as possible. The best way to make sure you are lining up parts accurately during the rebuild, is to make plenty of markings on every piece of the turbo, during the rebuild.
Markings can be scratched directly into the metal or marked with a writing utensil, but make sure you make markings which will help you guide the parts back to the exact location they originally were in. Obviously, do not use a pencil or pen, as these will easily wash off when you are cleaning the parts. Using a fine tipped permanent marker would be your best writing utensil to use; however, making the markings into the metal will leave the markings for future use, so the parts will always be able to line up perfectly.
Some of the most important places to make markings are around the edges where the center-section meets both the compressor housing and exhaust housing, where the turbine meets the center-section, and everywhere in and around the various parts of the center-section, in order to remember the exact placement of each individual part.
All of the steps to making markings to keep your turbo balanced are mentioned in the Turbo Rebuild Guide. The guide is a step by step guide on how to rebuild a turbo, with extra tips on how to keep the turbo balanced, how to clean the parts, and how to properly disassemble, then reassemble a turbocharger.
