Figuring out what subwoofer sound you want in your vehicle is half the battle of picking out a car audio system. Vented Enclosures:

These are said to be as loud as double the amount of loudness of an old school sealed box. I'm not sure if I believe that completely, but I'm sure that in the right conditions it is absolutely true. If you look around at all the major bass winning competitions, most of the winners are pushing vented enclosures.

This vent in the box sort of creates a bass that moves out a further distance at a certain level to where it is heard. A sealed box puts out a level of sound that is lost way before the vented enclosure. A con to vented enclosures I have heard is that they do not give off as crisp of a bass as some people desire. Sealed enclosures put out the most crisp subwoofer sound of bass out of any of the boxes available. This is also the oldest method of enclosure. These are the easiest to build usually and are still used today by a lot of people that desire their sound.

Im driving a Cobalt i listen to rap and i just went to a car audio place and they recommended JL 12s in a ported box for $350. any good?

neither of those.. their all junk, especially the kenwood subs.. sound terrible, DEFFINATLY not legacy

best there is the kicker cvr... the rockford fosgate is good, except their shallow mount subs.. and those really are only needed in small trucks and stuff.. you would get more from the CVR

but also look into MTX or alpine. the mtx thunder 4500 subwoofer can pound if powered right, i used to have 2 12" mtx thunder 4500 subs with an alpine mrp m-450 amp..out pounded several 15" set ups, and got really loud

the alpine type-r subwoofer is nice too

but of all those choices.. deffinatly the kicker CVR
