I'm envious of your ride. I understand you need some bass in your standard system. Your idea to add a Bass tube to your car is the most logical solution to get some Bass with minimum modification. An amplifier is absolutely necessary to power a sub-woofer but not all sub-woofers need an external amplifier. Some of them have built-in amplifiers. Bass tubes tend to have built-in amplifiers. Matching the component sub-woofer to an external amplifier is very important to get very clear bass effect. Always follow the RMS and not the PMPO ratings in Watts. Since all good car entertainment systems are CEA-2006 certified you'll have evenly matched RMS ratings even with different brands. So a 500W RMS component Sub-woofer at 4 ohms would need an amplifier that can deliver 500W RMS power at 4 ohms in a single channel. A custom built enclosure holding a component sub-woofer will produce the "loudest purest thumping" bass. Crossovers are necessary for all component systems to filter out the frequencies that the speaker cannot reproduce. For example, tweeters cannot reproduce bass so a crossover will send only high frequencies to the tweeters. Low frequencies will be sent to the sub-woofer but some extremely low frequencies which may damage your speaker may be cut out. A high quality wooden enclosure with absolutely no panel gaps is very important for the sub-woofer to work efficiently. The box should also have a port hole as the speaker will displace enormous amounts of air to reproduce the bass and a port hole of the appropriate size is absolutely necessary.

My suggestion - Get a Bass tube which is powered and carry it to the Audi showroom and they'll install it into your boot with minor electrical modifications. The next A6 I see with thumping bass, and I'll know it's you. Cheers!
