If you want to get mechanics and people who work on their own cars going in a heated debate, start an argument about whether aftermarket car parts are as good as OEM parts. It may seem like a basic argument, but it is actually fairly convoluted.

Okay, what are OEM parts? "OEM" stands for "original equipment manufacturer". In practical terms, this means the party that made the original part for your car be it the muffler, bumper, clutch or whatever. Isn't this part just the car company selling the car be it Ford, BMW or whomever? Nope. Most car companies outsource much of the car part manufacturing to smaller companies.

This outsourcing is why the bankruptcies of General Motors and Chrysler have such far reaching impacts. Not only does it impact everyone at those companies, but everyone at each independent company that makes parts for GM and Chrysler. If these independent companies lose enough business, they may have to shut down. This is problematic since they also make parts for other brands. This is also why the idea that a Ford is "American made" and a Toyota isn't is mostly hogwash. All the brands are getting a lot of their parts from the same suppliers whether they are in the United States, Canada, Mexico or wherever.

Aftermarket car parts come in two variations. The first is simply a generic form of the OEM part, much like generic pharmaceuticals compared to name brands. The second is an accessory for a car such as cold air intake systems for the engine, racks to carry bikes and so on. There isn't much debate that this second form of aftermarket car parts is fine, but the first variation is the area where contention starts.

OEM parts are almost always more expensive than aftermarket car parts. That being said, the price difference often isn't that large in many cases. This is important because OEM parts are generally better for your car than aftermarket parts. The issue is not the manufacturing process of the aftermarket car supplier, but the simply fact that the OEM part is made using the same molds and manufacturing process of the original part on your car. This means it should fit perfectly whereas the aftermarket part might not be an exact fit.

So, which should you go with? It depends. Aftermarket is definitely the choice when it comes to improving the performance on your car. If you are just looking for a part replacement, OEM parts are going to be slightly better although more expensive. Only you can decide if the price difference makes the aftermarket car parts a better deal.

Bmw, Mercedes Soon to Join Forces?

We’ve always known Mercedes-Benz and BMW to be the arch-rivals in the uber-car market department; in fact most of us prefer these two great European automakers locked in a perpetual battle as to who comes up with the most luxurious car, the smoothest performance, the neatest in-car gadgets, or the best auto parts from the engine down to the Mercedes or BMW camshafts.

But it looks like in the ever-changing car industry no rivalries are really sacred.

BMW has recently expressed hope to join forces with DaimlerChrysler and the PSA Peugeot Citroen Group in the development of a hybrid technology, as well as for a new transmission and engine technology.

BMW Exec Klaus Draeger, in an interview with Auto Motor und Sport, revealed that component sharing between the three carmakers would not be impossible within the next four years. He however, discounted plans for common platforms.

With PSA, Draeger hopes to see further cooperation in engine development, referring to the deal it shared for the new Mini engine as an example of the success that could be achieved. According to Draeger, technology sharing can be done without compromising brand-specific characteristics of the engines.

BMW’s Marketing Chief, Michael Ganal has also confirmed BMW’s interest in working with Mercedes-Benz. “Cooperation is the right approach because it allows both carmakers entrepreneurial freedom,” Ganal reportedly told German newspaper Wirtschaftswoche.

Ganal did not say in which areas the cooperation between the two companies will increase, but said there are several possibilities.

Unfortunately for Draeger and Ganal though, Mercedes-Benz has earlier rejected a prior proposal from BMW that the two luxury carmakers should work more closely in the future, as revealed by Mercedes marketing Chieft Klaus Maier.

Maier, in an interview with Handelsblatt, acknowledged that the two had worked together in the past, commenting “we cooperate naturally with BMW in a few technical areas, like development of hybrid engines.” The consensus in the Mercedes boardroom however, is that there are no plans to work together beyond the current co-development of hybrid drivetrains.

There are rumors though suggesting that Mercedes may work with BMW for the production of the next-generation A-Class on the Mini platform from Beemer's Oxford factory.

Reuters, citing German motor magazine Auto Bild, is reporting that BMW, the world's largest premium carmaker, and its closest rival, Mercedes-Benz, are currently in negotiations over a partnership to build subcompact cars.

According to the report, the two companies are expected to make a decision in July on whether to build the next generation Mercedes A-Class on BMW's Mini platform.

A partnership with another automaker will benefit BMW since the heavy cost pressure could result in the loss of money for Mini should its Oxford, England, plant not run at full capacity.

Meanwhile, Mercedes has plans of building the next A-Class in 2012 on a platform to be developed jointly with Chrysler. These plans however have been sacked after parent DaimlerChrysler's disposal of its majority stake in the money-losing U.S. carmaker.

Chrysler Sebring Convertible JXi needs new PCM...which source to trust...mechanic? factory? ?

Repair shop says my PCM is out. 1999 Chrysler Sebring Convertible JXi...2.5 liter...part # 04671636AG (this is the # the shop gave me)...they are offering a factory OEM refurbed computer (which is on national back-order according to Chrysler?) for around $600 plus labor, tax etc with 12 mo 12,0000 mi warr. This has been going on for three weeks now. They are now telling me that a local dealer can order the PCM from who knows where new and have in in 3-4 days. But, good news (?) a local salvage yard has one which can be put on next day with 30 day warranty. Don't really know who to trust...

If I knew for sure it was the PCM, then I wouldn't use the salvage yard part. The 30 day warranty isn't much at all, and it's going to be off of a vehicle that was wrecked, which isn't always good for the modules. Also, unless the shop covers the labor themselves, you'll probably have to pay the labor if it does need to be replaced within the 30 days, this is something to ask about.

If you buy the Mopar reman module, you get the better warranty of 12 months 12k miles, which is basically the industry standard warranty for PCM's. If the dealership installs it, the labor is also covered under the parts warranty, but I'm not sure how it works if an independent shop replaces it. A quick call to the dealership should clear it up for you, if it isn't, ask the shop doing the work about if they cover labor.

As for the new one, not sure where they'd be getting it from as the Mopar PCM's have superceded to the reman module part number, which is now part number R4671636AH with a list price of around $540 exchange (the new modules cost quite a bit more than that, when they were available they would be around $800 list price). Possible that another dealer somewhere has a new one leftover that's been in stock for some time, but also possible that they're talking about getting an aftermarket PCM. Aftermarket PCM's aren't always of the best quality.

But, before spending the money they want for it, I would seriously consider taking it for a second opinion on it needing a new PCM from a different shop. I would recommend taking it to the dealer repair center since they know the cars better than any independent shop and know what to look for with certain problems. Never know, it might just save you hundreds.
