Now lets talk about the head unit and power for your new audio equipment. There are many options with a head unit and today's technology provides a wide selection of music formats. New gadgets and devices like iPods and Mp3 players with UBS inputs play back smooth skip free music. Most of the new stereos have satellite radio and HD radio capabilities, again the options are endless especially on a larger craft (i.e. video, TV, Bluray, etc.).
For this boat we are going to install a Kenwood iPod control head unit with an auxiliary remote mounted by the throttle on drivers side (this is optional). The nice thing with a unit like this is that the iPod is stored inside, thus keeping it dry. The control box for the actual system mounts where the amplifier goes, out of sight. Sometimes the old radio may have been installed with a marine radio box, and you may need to make an adapter plate. For this application we used black polished Plexiglas-glass for mounting our unit.
Moving onto the audio system connections, including power cables, RCA's, speaker wires, remotes, and such. Make sure that you use marine audio grade RCA's, they may seem over priced but they do make a difference in sound quality. This 2001 Rinker was short on space, so we mounted a 200 watt 2 Ch amplifier behind the 7.7" components, and mounted a 900 watt 5 Ch amplifier and the head unit control box up front in a dry storage box. The gauges of wire we are using are as follows: 4 gauge for the power, 14 gauge for the speakers, and 12 gauge wire for our sub woofers. Always check manufacture's diagrams for proper hook up procedures and amplifier gain settings. Again if you have never done this before you may need to seek professional help.
Next on the list is the DC powering, this is VERY important when building a high powered audio system. The reason you need to be careful is, this type of system will use a lot of power when turned up, and it doesn't take long to drain your starting battery. A dedicated audio grade battery and a battery isolator (this allows the audio battery to charge while the boat is running, but isolates it from the starting battery so it will not drain it dead) will help a lot. An inline circuit breaker must be placed between isolator and audio system, (this will protect both the boat and the audio system) this is EXTREMELY important. You will also need to run marine grade power cables from the alternator, battery, and a true ignition source. Once again this type of installation is risky and should be handled by a professional. Now that we have hooked it all up we will check all connections one more time just to be safe. Make sure all gains are turned down and then flip the breaker to the on position, now its time to set up the sound.
Setting up your new marine system is the best part, we always use a test CD because it give you good frequencies to balance the bass, mids, and highs. Your manufactures manual can explain in more detail the procedure and purpose of each knob on your specific brand of equipment. Just remember, the gain adjustments are not volume knobs, but are there to match the inputs of the head unit. Damage can be caused to both speakers and amps if this is not done correctly. Another thing to consider is your boat is an open environment and needs to be louder, unlike a car or home system where you are listening in an enclosed environment. Good power makes a clear system. Now it is time to kick back, and enjoy your new investment. Thanks.

my boat audio amplifier cuts out tower speakers, but works if you slightly plug in jacks to amp?
slight contact to left/right terminals system works great. Repalced rca jacks and now no audio from tower? How can i check the audio input to these speakers?
Use a volt meter to see where the power stops ![]()
It may be the RCA cords themselves.
